Introduction

Welcome to The Hard Drive Farmer’s Blog!!  This blog documents my adventures hard drive farming Burstcoin (BURST) and exploring other hard drive based blockchain projects.  Currently there are two main uses for hard drive farming in the cryptocurrency world, Proof of Capacity (PoC) and decentralized file hosting.  Proof of Capacity farming operates in a similar fashion to Proof of Work (PoW) mining in that it is a consensus algorithm that validates financial transactions.  PoC uses stored algorithms on your hard drives to solve the hashing problem, which allows it to use minimal energy, heat and noise in comparison to PoW systems.  Burstcoin is currently the only blockchain project that is using the Proof of Capacity.

There are several decentralized file hosting coins coming to market that allow you to sell your hard drive space across a network to earn utility tokens such as Sia, Storj, Filecoin and Shardix.  Some of these projects are attempting to build a decentralized internet system such as the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), while others are more focused on P2P file storage markets.

About Me

Hi, my name is Doug Christman.  I have an MA in Economics, MBA in Real Estate Finance and work in Business Intelligence for a large agricultural supply and services cooperative in the United States.  My strong interests in financial systems and information technology solutions came together when I learned about blockchain and cryptocurrencies.  I spent a long time researching different blockchain technologies and was impressed with the energy efficient solution of hard drive farming provided by Burstcoin.  With the blessing of my wife and help of my trusty cat, I decided to build a Burstcoin farming rig with a refurbished Dell desktop computer in August 2018.
